Is it an Easter Egg?

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl - Jesse Andrews

So there are two mentions of a very, very minor character named "Dave Smeggers" in Jesse Andrews' "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl."

I know hardly anything about the novelist Dave Eggers, nor have I read any of his works. But the name is so close that I wonder if this is an Easter egg for Andrews' adult readers or an in-joke between friends or acquaintances. Are the two writers friends? I have no idea.

Turns out "Smeggers" in the book is a stoner.

Does anyone know if I'm onto something or just on something?
