Reading Order: Roxane Gay Edition

Ayiti - Roxane Gay An Untamed State - Roxane Gay

Books should have an internal logic, but reading should have its own kind of logic - or rather strategy. Here's a tip:

Roxane Gay's novel, "An Untamed State," is a direct descendent of one of the short stories in her collection, "Ayiti." Moreover, images, lines, incidents from several other of the "Ayiti" stories appear in "An Untamed State" forward.

I'm glad that I read "Ayiti" first. While I believe the book is a fine volume of short stories and micro fiction on its own, I think, considering my observation above, it would have been less satisfying had I read it after "Untamed State."
